(More customer reviews)This is a great addition to any camera setup, but especially for shooting macro.The neck is extremely sturdy and well-constructed, and is stiff enough to support an external flash and lightbox at some distance from the camera.(You can just screw one end into the bottom of your shoe cord and the other into either a tripod mounting bracket or else the socket in your camera.)
Additionally, this can just replace a standard camera bracket for portrait and other shooting; it is sturdy enough to grip with your left hand just as you would a normal bracket grip.Using this, I can shoot flowers handheld, with the flash positioned over or even behind them.
This thing adds weight, though.It can be tricky to use handheld, screwed into the bottom tripod socket.(You can't, for instance, use your left hand to manually focus, unless your right hand is of iron.)A solution is to get a flat bracket that will accept a tripod screw, a screw for the camera, and a socket for the gooseneck.Metz makes these.
But note: one end of this thing is 3/8 the other 1/4 inch.This was annoying for me, since my equipment is all 1/4.The solution is to get a 3/8-female-to-1/4-male adapter.Manfrotto makes these.
Once everything is ironed out, this device really is useful and recommended; I don't know why more people don't get one of these instead of a rigid bracket.The flexibility is incredibly handy!
